2nd Antioxidants Webinar

Exercise and Health

“Exercise is medicine” is a well-known mantra. With the continuous development of life science, exercise studies have entered a new era of expounding cellular and molecular mechanisms. Among them, redox-mitochondrial biology and medicine research has become the most active new growth point in current exercise science. Mitochondria are the “power station” and the center of cell signal regulation. Research in the past two to three decades has shown that mitochondria are the source and also the target of reactive oxygen species, and mitochondrial homeostasis plays an important role in aging and age-related diseases. Therefore, in-depth study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of redox-mitochondrial homeostasis regulated by exercise will not only further clarify the effect of exercise on health but will also provide a theoretical basis for exercise to delay aging and prevent diseases, including metabolic disorder, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. This is undoubtedly the main intention behind this webinar on “Exercise and Health” by the Antioxidants journal.

Invited Speakers

School of Kinesiology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA

Introduction
Bio
Li Li Ji is currently Professor at the School of Kinesiology and Director of Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene and Exercise Science at the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities, USA. He received his PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1985, and postdoctoral training in the Institute of Enzyme Research, UW-Madison. He was on faculty of Kinesiology and Nutritional Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Professor and Department Chair in UW-Madison prior to 2011. Li Li Ji’s primary research focus is biochemical and molecular biological consequence of exercise, aging and redox related pathogenesis. He is among the first researchers to study the role of antioxidants in exercise and aging and how physical activity and nutrition impact on antioxidant gene expression and signaling. He has published over 170 articles and book chapters in the field and given over a hundred international and domestic lectures. He has served on NIH, NASA, NSF, and American Heart Association grant review panels, seven editorial boards and as a reviewer for a large number of scientific journals. Li Li Ji is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology and American College of Sports Medicine. He has been a visiting professor at Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Adjunction professor of City of Tianjin, Beijing Sport University, Chinese National Research Institute on Sport Sciences and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, among other universities and research institutes in the world.

School of Aerospace Medicine, Fourth Military Medical University, Xi’an, China

Introduction
Bio
Dr. Xing Zhang received his PhD in physiology from the Fourth Military Medical University in 2013 and serves as an investigator in the Key Laboratory of Aerospace Medicine of the Ministry of Education in China. His research focuses on the biological effects of lifestyle (e.g., exercise and diet) on health and the underlying mechanisms, with specific interests in metabolic regulation and mitochondrial function. Recently, Dr. Zhang and his colleagues focus on searching new exerkines and their potential implications in promotion of cardiovascular health. His major findings include the role of mitochondrial flash in regulating intracellular ATP homeostasis and the role of exosome-shuttled miRNAs as exerkines in promoting cardiovascular health.
